March Culture of the Month: Mesopotamians
This month we’ll be focusing on Mesopotamia which isn’t really a culture but a region where many similar cultures rose and fell and influenced each other over the centuries. Major cultures that lived in the region and rose to dominance at different times included the Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians, Assyrians, Hittites, and others. Mesopotamia is important because it is the cradle of civilization. While mankind lived in small tribes in other parts of the world, the Mesopotamian people lived in cities ruled by great kings. This is the region that gave us the Code of Hammurabi, the Epic of Gilgamesh, monotheism, mathematics, chemistry, and astronomy. Some if the earliest known literature and music comes from this region.
This week, we’ll be looking at the mythology of the region, including one of the oldest literary pieces known to man, The Epic of Gilgamesh.
